What is The Red Tent?

It is an opportunity to tell our stories, share our wisdom, cry and laugh and rest inside a place that we collectively create to honor our place as women in society. The Red Tent is a way for women to take our inner momentum, that feeling like the time is now and come forward with everything we are as women. It offers us a place to incubate, dream, slow down, and not have an agenda or plan. It is also a women-only space where we can share stories, laughter, songs, food and honor our unique experiences as women.

Each Red Tent operating around the world is unique, as is each individual gathering. At The Red Tent - Red Deer, our meeting typically begins with an opening circle for introductions, brief guided meditation, optional sharing on a specific topic or theme, a closing circle to ground and offer gratitude, and then open time for general discussion and connection with other attendees.

Why is it called the Red Tent?

In 1997 a fictional novel called ‘The Red Tent’ was published by Anita Diamant. She wrote about a time when tribal women in the desert bled together on the New Moon and during this time they would all gather in the women’s Red Tent for connection and support. Her book struck a chord with many women who yearned for such a place among us to go and to be. The Red Tent movement is not focused on the menstrual cycle as much as it focused on honoring our womanhood journeys in all our many stages. Since the books publishing women around the world have begun to bring Red Tents to large gatherings of women so that we could experience what it would feel like to spend time connecting with other women in safe and supportive spaces.

What is a circle?

Circles can mean many things to different people but here in the Red Tent our circles respect that we enter here with many diverse beliefs and lifestyles. A circle is time for women to share what is in their hearts. We pass something that represents to us that this woman is taking her turn and we listen deeply to what she has to say whatever it is. It is important to understand that circle is not therapy. It is a short increment of time to be able to check in with how you are feeling, share one story, an insight, a poem. We strive to create a safe place for women to share with confidentiality and compassion. We listen rather than giving her advice or urging her to stop crying. We make room for our feelings. We share the time among us depending on who is there. No one is required to participate or to speak. You can still be in the Red Tent and not be in the circle if you choose, but this rarely happens.

As we celebrate ourselves and heal the perception of our collective and individual hurts we claim our place as powerful leaders and agents of change in the world. Our sisters, mothers, daughters, grandmothers, aunts, friends are all welcome.
