The theatre is a focal point for residents and visitors alike, offering a broad range of cultural events designed to meet many diverse interests and needs. Programs involve local groups as well as touring attractions and provide access to events for families, seniors, youths and adults, thereby enriching the overall quality of life in the region. A landmark on the city's waterfront, it also serves as an important meeting place for a variety of community events, seminars and educational conferences. Over 250 events are held in the theatre each year attracting over 100,000 people.

Architect of The Port Theatre, Terry Williams' goal was to build a theatre that had good sight lines from all seats, excellent acoustics and a wonderful sense of intimacy. Audiences have raved about these features since it opened.

The Port Theatre Society was formed in 1989 to raise money to build an 800-seat theatre on the breathtaking waterfront in downtown Nanaimo. The Port Theatre opened in September of 1998, thanks to grants from the Federal/Provincial Infrastructure Works Program and an outstanding level of community support. Since then, The Port Theatre has continued to be supported through the creation of a number of initiatives and through the people of this community who selflessly commit their time and effort to lend a hand.

Volunteers truly make The Port Theatre’s world go round. Since its inception, The Port Theatre has relied on volunteers to assist with everything from washing linens to answering phones. On show nights, over 20 volunteers may be present to light the way to your seat, sell you a treat, and take your coat. Their talents, humour, and guidance are always appreciated in areas such as the administration and participation in committees. With over 200 volunteers, The Port Theatre is blessed to have a full complement from which to draw upon for support, advice, and friendship.

Fulfilling this mission requires much public support. The Port Theatre has a number of initiatives which include annual and capital donations, show sponsorship, and memberships. For only $25 a year for a basic membership, show goers can enjoy discounts, advanced buys, and advanced notice to upcoming events. The Port Theatre also offers corporate memberships that offer an opportunity for employers to treat their staff.

The Arts is for everyone. The Port Theatre’s ‘Theatre Angel Program’ provides complimentary tickets to people in the region who would not normally be able to purchase a ticket to a live performance event. The tickets are distributed by various social service agencies and the program has proven to highlight someone’s day and enrich their lives through the arts.

Ticket sales are available online at www.porttheatre.com or by calling the Ticket Centre at 250-754-8550. The Ticket Centre is open Monday to Friday from 11am – 5:30pm and Saturday from 12pm – 5pm. It is also open two hours prior to every show. The Port Theatre strives to offer high quality Canadian content – so be sure to check out the next show!
