Imagine standing waist deep in the mighty Skeena, the shear movement of water traveling beneath you, the morning fog rolling down the mountainsides almost directly onto the water, the cool crisp air biting at your skin…the perfect cast. You rolled it out 70, no maybe 80 feet, one mend to the line and then… suddenly an explosive to your fly. A 40 pound plus King Salmon rips line from your reel and you think to yourself there is no way I am stopping this fish… You heart races and after that split second of panic you are in for the fish of your life. There are not many places on earth left that a Spey angler can experience this… Malcolm Wood (2013)

For the true fly fishing junkie looking to encounter the largest King Salmon and Steelhead the world has to offer there is Skeena Spey…

Skeena Spey is a company comprised of dedicated Spey anglers, all of whom live a life committed to the pursuit of the largest wild Steelhead and Salmon in the World. We operate out of Terrace BC, a northern mountain town surrounded by rugged coastal mountain peaks and beautiful wild rivers. Our lodge is located riverside on the mighty Skeena home to the largest genetic strains of Salmon and Steelhead in the World. The mild coastal climate here allows for good angling conditions for ocean bright fish from March through October. During this time knowledgeable Salmon and Steelhead anglers migrate to Terrace in search of trophy fish in the Skeena River and her many tributaries.

From our location on the lower Skeena River we are able to swing flies for these remarkable fish whilst they are still fresh from the salt. In addition to fishing the mainstream Skeena River, we also concentrate our efforts fishing the Kitumkalum River. This special river is a lower tributary of the Skeena that is famous for producing some of the largest fish in the system. The Salmon record for the river is a remarkable 99lb! The Skeena is home to the world record Steelhead catch and some of the largest Chinook (King) Salmon left on the planet.

Founded by Malcolm Wood and Brian Niska with cooperation from legendary Steelhead guide Brad Zeerip. Skeena Spey is a company comprised of professional guides and instructors, a group of experienced and passionate anglers with a over 50 years combined experience.

Malcolm comes from a long-standing hospitality background and has been on the search for the largest Chinook Salmon in the world, making the Skeena his primary ‘fishing” home. Pieroway Rods have even named a Spey rod after him for taking down 50lb plus King Salmon on the Skeena River.

Brian Niska has been guiding and teaching fly fishing for the past 20 years. He has contributed to modern spey-fishing equipment design, including the revolutionary Metal Detector Spey series. Brian is highly sought after as a Spey casting instructor and has been a featured demonstrator at a variety of claves, outdoor shows and EXPOs throughout North America. He is one of most qualified instructors in the country, certified as a Master Casting Instructor and Two Handed Casting Instructor with the Federation of Fly Fishers.

The Skeena Spey guiding team consists of veteran Salmon and Steelhead guides Justin Berry and Pat Beahen both of whom have years of experience guiding for Steelhead on the Squamish, Dean and Bulkley rivers. Filmmaker Gregg Lauder is returning to Z-Boat after a successful season guiding on the Skeena last year. Gregg’s film ‘Steelmetal’ has been featured in film festivals and won top prize at the 2013 Home Grown Film Festival in Squamish.

Skeena Spey’s aim is to offer you expert coaching and instruction with the best team of passionate fisherman who know and understand the region. To get around we use custom built jet boats to access the best sections of the river for fresh fish. We also offer float trips, a pleasant way to experience some of the most beautiful rivers around, or, for the more adventurous, heli-fishing to get to those hard to reach spots.

Homebase is the cozy Z Boat River House where you will enjoy comfortable home-style accommodation and healthy meals at the best dinner table in Steelhead country. Enjoy our spectacular view, delicious food and warm hospitality. We provide friendly, home-style service in our scenic riverfront lodge. Relax after fishing in comfortable surroundings; relive the day’s fish stories over a game of pool, enjoy a cocktail on the deck while watching the river or enjoy quiet time in your private room; it’s up to you.
