My name is Sonéy, a South African now calling Canada my home.

Growing up with a mother that lives and breaths photography, I think you can say it’s in my blood. I never had a written journal in which I recorded my life, instead I have photos. I have a memory for nearly every event, moment and person in my life. You never think of those moments as important until you sit with someone and go down memory lane, or your kids are all grown up and out the house, or you achieved something in life which you no longer do. It’s THEN when you realize that these are not just pictures, but memories of a brief period in time which you will never live again. But by capturing it through a lens you can bring them back to life and relive the moments again and again and eventually include someone in the story when sharing it.

To me it’s important that people have these memories to cherish and pass down generations to come, so they too can appreciate their heritage. Therefore I capture lifestyle moments, as you live it. Important moments and events, and the people we share them with. Let’s remember the journey we took to get where we are today. Leaving behind my homeland and my life gave me new perspective, that photos are not just important for memories, but they are important to remember who you are and how far you’ve come.
