Built along ancient First Nations trade routes, the town of Newmarket was founded in 1801 as a Quaker settlement.
Originally a fur trading post, “New” Market was the largest farmer’s market in the area, and quickly became a centre for agriculture, commerce and small industry.
Newmarket was also the heart of the Upper Canada Rebellion in 1837 and many local area residents marched on Toronto.
The Town of Newmarket is rich in history, evident in the bustling historical downtown area, home to locally and independently owned shops, businesses and restaurants
