Programs Administered by Bridges Family Programs

Bridges Program– Family and Community Support Workers (FCSW) provide information, support, advocacy and service coordination to families who have children under the age of 18 years and who reside in Medicine Hat, Redcliff, Dunmore and Cypress County. FCSW’s help eligible families who identify a need for information, family support, advocacy and/or service coordination. Referrals are accepted from professionals, agencies, the general public and families themselves.
Common issues that FCSW’s assist families with are: positive parenting practices; child development, meeting basic needs in terms of food and shelter; employment; education; funding for education, recreation, child care, etc.; mental health and addiction; life skills; self care; child care; conflict resolution, problem solving, recreation options; advocacy; transitioning children with disabilities into adulthood; completing forms and applications, and child support and custody.

Southeast Alberta Home Visitation Program (Best Babies and Building Blocks)- The Southeast Alberta Home Visitation Partnership Programs (HVP) include Best Babies and Building Blocks. These programs are available in Medicine Hat, Brooks, Bow Island and Oyen and surrounding areas. Referrals are accepted from professionals, agencies, the general public and families themselves.
BEST BABIES - The Best Babies program is an early intervention initiative that is designed to support families in providing a nurturing, stimulating and safe environment for their child(ren). The program helps vulnerable pregnant woman to be healthy and have healthy babies. The program promotes healthy nutrition; breastfeeding; positive parent-child interaction and attachment; healthy child growth and development; increases family’s knowledge and usage of community supports; and improves parents ability to identify what their needs are and develop skills and confidence in managing their lives.

BUILDING BLOCKS - The Building Blocks program is an early intervention initiative that is designed to support families in providing a nurturing, stimulating and safe environment for their child(ren). The program promotes positive parent-child interaction and attachment; healthy child growth and development; increases family’s knowledge and usage of community supports; and improves parents ability to identify what their needs are and develop skills and confidence in managing their lives.

Children’s Fetal Alcohol Services (CFAS)- Children’s Fetal Alcohol Services offers three distinct services to families or caregivers in Medicine Hat, Brooks, Bow Island, Oyen and surrounding areas. Referrals are accepted from professionals, agencies, the general public and families themselves.
Consultation and Advocacy Services - The program provides consultation and advocacy services to families/caregivers who have a child(ren) with an FASD diagnosis or for whom FASD is suspected. The target child must be under the age of 18 to open and/or maintain a file with the program
Additionally, professionals from regional agencies and organizations may access consultation through the program on a case-by-case basis.
Neurodevelopmental Clinic - CFAS facilitates a Children’s Neurodevelopmental Clinic in Medicine Hat. Clinic is a multi-disciplinary body comprised of a team of community professionals.This team assesses, diagnoses, and develops intervention plans for children affected by prenatal alcohol exposure.
The Children’s Neurodevelopmental Clinic provides families with a local and thorough diagnostic option for their child(ren). Clinic accepts referrals for children living in Medicine Hat, Brooks, Bow Island, Oyen and surrounding areas; however families residing outside Medicine Hat are required to travel to Medicine Hat for assessment appointments. Clinic assesses children who are between the age of 4 and 17 years.
Prevention and Training Services - The program offers prevention presentations to regional schools and other community groups.
In addition to prevention presentations, the program collaborates with other agencies and FASD committees to offer and/or participate in public awareness activities in conjunction with International FASD Awareness Day.
Children’s Fetal Alcohol Services also offers professional training services to regional agencies and organizations to increase understanding of the primary and secondary disabilities associated with FASD, as well as appropriate intervention strategies for working with those affected by FASD.

First Steps- First Steps provides home visitation and intensive support to mothers and their families who live in Medicine Hat and the surrounding area, for three years. First Steps is designed to prevent future births of alcohol and drug exposed children and to help mothers build and maintain healthy, independent family lives. First Steps focuses on assisting women to obtain reliable family planning methods and maintain sobriety.

Regional FASD Diagnostic Clinic for Adults- This Clinic is facilitated similarly to our CFAS program. Individuals who are over the age of 18 years and living within the SEAFAN region (Medicine Hat, Brooks, Bow Island, Oyen and surrounding areas) and who suspect or confirm being exposed to alcohol prenatally are eligible for this program. Priority will be given to adults who have not previously received a FASD diagnosis with a neuropsychological assessment and adults who are not connected efficiently to community resources i.e. PDD, AISH, REDI, CORE, McMan. Clinic Coordination and Consultation services similar to CFAS, are provided.

Medicine Hat Legal Help Center- This clinic provides free summary legal advice, from a volunteer lawyer, to individuals who are not able to afford access to Justice. Legal summary advice may include information on divorce and separation, matrimonial property, custody, access and child support, criminal law, debt collection, employment, landlord and tenancy issues and small claims court. Clinics are held generally twice per month from 5 to 7 pm.
